Lost Pet Tips

Below are some tips for helping you locate your lost pet.   If you haven't already reported your animal as lost please click here to report a lost cat or click here to report a lost dog or contact our Lost & Found desk at (402) 444-7800  ext. 210.

  • If your pet is wearing ID with your phone number on it, make sure you are available to answer your phone.
  • Search the neighborhood surrounding your home as your pet may not have traveled far.  Ask your neighbors, postal carriers, and delivery drivers if they have seen an animal matching your pet's description.
  • Visit the Nebraska Humane Society as soon as possible. Our Animal Control Officers pick up many lost pets every day and they may have already picked up yours. When you visit our facility you will tour our stray holding kennels.
  • If your pet is microchipped, register the microchip number with the Nebraska Humane Society.   We will enter this information into our database which allows NHS staff to contact you faster if your pet is found.
  • If your pet is registered and/or licensed, call us to confirm that your information is current and inform us of any additional contact phone numbers.
  • Post a photo and description of your lost pet on Facebook and Twitter. Ask your friends/followers to share the information.
  • Create a flyer containing a recent photo of your pet and information regarding how you can be contacted if someone finds your animal.
  • Bookmark the NHS website to make it easy to search for your animal. Our website is updated every 30 minutes for your convenience. Look on the pages titled View Animals at NHS or reported Found to NHS:   Dogs      Cats
  • Continue checking with the Nebraska Humane Society daily by either coming into the shelter, going online, or calling 402- 444-7800 ext. 210.
  • Advertise in the lost pet section of your local newspapers and check the “found pets” column.
  • There are many sites on the internet you can search.  Just type in "Lost Pets" or "Missing Pets" on your favorite search engine.  Many people do advertise lost and found pets on Craigslist.com.
  • Don't limit your search to just our shelter. Sporting dogs can run for miles if they get the chance. Some pets will be picked up by well meaning passers-by and actually end up farther from home. Here are some neighboring shelters for metro residents:
    • Town and Country in Sarpy County
    • Council Bluffs Animal Shelter
    • Pottawattamie County Animal Shelter
    • Fremont Shelter
    • Capital Humane Society in Lincoln
