Paws for Life

Our pets are members of our families.  They provide us with unconditional love, companionship and joy every day. As devoted caretakers of our animal companions, we worry about what might happen to our pets in the event we become seriously ill or unable to care for them.

While planning your estate, appointing a friend or family member as your pet’s guardian is a sound option for many people. But here at the Nebraska Humane Society all too often we see what happens when good planning is not done.  We realize that it is not always possible to find a friend or family member willing to care for your pets.  For those who find themselves in this situation, we have developed an alternative for you.

Paws for Life is a special program accessible to those who have demonstrated an interest in helping the homeless animals by becoming a Paws Forever Legacy Society member who is planning on leaving a financial gift in their will or estate plan. Paws for Life truly is a win-win program.  It allows you the peace of mind knowing that your animal will be well cared for, and it allows you to help the homeless animals too!

Drawing on more than 135 years of animal adoption experience and expertise, NHS will work to ensure your pet has the type of lifelong, caring home you have pledged to provide them.

Paws for Life benefits:
  • Paws Forever Legacy Society members will have the opportunity to complete a Pet Profile guiding the NHS staff in finding an ideal home. A personal letter from you will go to the pet's new family.
  • NHS staff will be available to pick the pet up, within the Omaha area, when the owner is no longer able to care for the pet.  Arrangements for outside the Omaha area will be made on an individual basis.
  • Upon arrival, NHS staff veterinarians and behavior experts will examine the pet and provide medical care, vaccinations and behavior training as needed.
  • The Paws Forever Legacy Society member can have peace of mind knowing that the NHS staff will use an extensive one-on-one counseling process to screen potential adopters using information from the Pet Profile. Post-adoption follow-up from NHS staff will also be provided to ensure the placement is working well and the pet is being well cared for.
  • Access to NHS behavior experts will be provided to the new adopting family for any assistance with pet behavior issues that may arise.
