Adoption Process

The Nebraska Humane Society has a variety of pets available for adoption everyday.  To see available animals, click here.  Because of the volume of adoptions we do, we cannot guarantee an animal you see here will be available when you reach the shelter; however, our inventory is updated hourly during business hours.

Due to the high adoption rate at the shelter our staff can't answer emails or phone calls about specific animals pictured on the website.  Please come to the shelter to meet the pets in person.

1. When you come to the Shelter grab a pet matchmaking questionnaire from the North wall of the lobby. (Or you can find them on clipboards just inside the double doors to the Dog Adoption Kennels.) Complete both sides of the form and then take it with you to the kennel, cattery or critter to look for a new friend.
   
   
2. You may select up to three animals to meet. List them on your questionnaire and return it to the front desk.
   
   
3. When the next adoption counselor is available he or she will take you to a "get acquainted room" where you will meet your choices up close and personal.  At that time your adoption counselor can answer questions and advise you on choices.
   
   
4. Don't see an animal you like? Check back often- we have different animals in adoption EVERYDAY!

 Adoption Tips

• You must be at least 19 years old to adopt an animal from the Nebraska Humane Society.
  
  
• You must bring a valid ID
  
  
• Be prepared to spend some time at the shelter. The adoption process can take an hour or longer, and you may have to wait to see a counselor. Try to come during the week, early in the day!
  
  
• Arrive Early! Because each adoption take time, adoption applications must be in 30 minutes prior to closing time.
  
  
• Everyone in the family should meet the new addition- so spouses, children, etc. should be ready to make a visit before you sign the final papers.
  
  
• Children should be apprised of the responsibilities and proper treatment of new four legged family members.
  
  
• If you have a dog and wish to adopt another, your resident dog will need to meet the new dog AFTER your initial visit.
  
  
• Do you have time for a pet? Do you have young children, travel frequently, go to school full-time, or work for the military? These are all common reasons animals are surrendered to our shelter?
  
  
• Can you afford a pet?  Expenses can add up quickly, consider: routine veterinary care, training classes, food, supplies, toys and unexpected veterinary expenses!
  
  
• Your lifestyle: Can you easily leave for the weekend, be away from home for extended hours, or change your schedule with ease? Not once you have a pet! You will have to arrange for care for your new pet... Pets depend on us for food, water and attention!!
  
  
• Have you done your research?  Shelters across the country are full of animals who were surrendered by their previous owners who did not! For example, many breeds of dogs have special energy requirements; kittens should be adopted in pairs; and some dogs prefer homes with no children.
  
  
• Additional tips to keep in mind when looking to adopt:
• When looking to add a pet to a home with an existing pet, adopting a younger pet of the opposite sex is usually the best match.
• Dogs have a variety of energy requirements. Be aware of these requirements!
• If you are adding a cat to a home with an existing cat, you will need to keep them separated for at least 14 days to prevent possible spread of common kitty cold!
• The number of litter boxes in your home should equal the number of cats PLUS ONE!
• Adopting an adopt pet is usually the best option for homes with young children.
  
  
• Your counselor will be able to answer additional questions for you to create the best match.

 Adoption Prices

When you adopt from the Nebraska Humane Society we have already screened all animals for several life-threatening diseases and performed procedures that are critical for maintaining your pet’s good health. Generous donations to the Nebraska Humane Society adoption program have made it possible to include these important services in your adoption fee--at a greatly reduced cost. We think the price is right and pets are the best!

• HIPP (Hi Profile Pets)- $150 and up
  HIPP pets are those dogs and cats who are in high demand, may be purebred and whose fee at a pet store might be $600 or more.  HIPP pets have been given full exams by our veterinarians.  Their higher fees go to help other pets who wait for months to find homes.

• Rats, Hamsters, Gerbils, Doves, Small Turtles, Finches- $5
• Guinea Pigs- $10
